I grew up in Mississippi and have only gotten into "snow sports" since moving to NH in 1997. However, I didn't get started with hockey until 2006, because I wasn't sure I was a good enough skater. Last time I had gone skating, I was about 5 years old, at an ice skating rink in the mall in New Orleans, and I didn't have good memories of that.
But while on a business trip to Salt Lake City in January 2006, I tried ice skating again - and all my middle school years of roller skating really helped - it was like I had been skating all along! I wanted to try some more agile moves on the skates, but I was chicken - I thought to myself, "If only I could be fully padded, so that if I fell, it didn't hurt...hey, ice hockey players wear lots of pads!"
A friend of mine had been asking me to try hockey for years, so I finally did! I borrowed some gear from friends and showed up at the Nor'Easters. Everyone was really nice and made me feel right at home. The team had players of all skill levels, so it was easy to fit in. It's been really fun!
